Micellar water – is it safe?

Today micellar water became very popular cosmetic product. Some of us already have it in every day face routine, and some already substituted usual – cleansing, toning and moisturising with micellar water.

Micellar water is often advertised as product which doesn’t need washing off with water. But many aestheticians have opposite opinions.

First of all I want to say that this is a pretty good product. Which can not only clean your skin to make it feel fresher, but also take makeup off, even water resistant one. But the biggest danger is in what has been advertised, that micellar water doesn’t need rinsing. And exactly this recommendation may cause troubles for your skin.

There are 3 main types of micellar water.

First type is based on PEG, contain harsh diluters (butylene glycol, propylene glycol), which may cause irritation and dryness if stays on skin. And whatever the advert is saying, this micellar water should be rinsed off.

Second type is micellar water which contains nontoxic, low irritant components such as — Lauryl Glucoside, Coco Glucoside. This kind of micellar water can be used without rinsing time to time, without significant impact on your skin.

Third type is micellar water with contains poloxamers (Poloxamer 188 , Poloxamer 407). This type counts as low irritant and can be used without rinsing. Basically this type was first product which contained sign – “no rinsing”, but after changing components, developers forget to change directions, which made a good selling point.

The question is to rinse, or not to rinse?

Let’s forget about all this chemical knowledge, and remember that we wouldn’t be able to educate our consumers enough, for them to be able choose safe products for themselves. Although micellar water also contains other SAS (surface-active substances) which will irritate skin, if they are present therein continuously.

The vast majority of dermatologists recommend washing off the remains of the micellar water, in order to avoid the development of delayed side effects.

Nobody objects that sometimes we can use micellar water without rinsing — but it's not worth doing regularly.

Don’t be afraid of water. Our skin is genetically ready to the influence of water more then to the influence of some cosmetic components. Use micellar water wisely and stay healthy.
